Windows Movie Maker 2.1 is one free video editing software. With Movie Maker 2.1 you can create, edit and share movies. Building a movie is as easy as dragging and dropping shots. When you are finished you can share your movie via the web, email or burn to cd. Windows Movie Maker is already installed on PC’s running Windows XP or later. In addition, Window Movie Maker has many add-ons to enhance your capabilities. Movie maker is well designed and allows you to edit video with ease. Windows Media Player will play movie maker videos and can play files such .asf, .wma, .avi, .mp3, and .wav for audio to name a few. Movie Maker will also converts to quicktime 7.6.7 when using Windows XP or later.
Apple iMovie is another free video editing software comparable to Windows Movie Maker but is an application used on the MAC operating system. I really like iMovie because I found that it was fast and a well thought out design. In comparing both of these free video editing programs I preferred iMovie only because I noticed that some of the effects used in Windows Media had some problems when introduced to the movie. At times certain effects slowed the program down. They both seemed easy to use and iMovie seemed to have more options to edit and personalize video with no problems. iMovie creates .imovieproject files. To play on the PC you would need to create an iMovie video cd. You can also export an iMovie video to quicktime, email, or web. Our assignment to edit a movie allowed me to practice using iMovie to delete clips and shorten the film and even add copyright notation.
I have used both types of video editing software and have realized that there are many types and people use what they are most comfortable with. This classes reading from Siegchrist it brought up a good point that It’s a good idea to try the free versions to decide whether its right for you. Once you choose the software that is right for you, you can purchase the latest program for added features. One important thing that sometimes is overlooked when purchasing software is the support. As Siegchrist stated is “crucial” to have good support to be successful with the software.
